After four months in Texas, I was hungry to go home, and I took Labor Day Weekend as an opportunity to begin telecommuting. It took me three or four days to make it home. I probably am too much of a tourist to drive more than one hundred miles in a single clip.
I was happy to be on the open road, and I logged each stop in my Moleskinne journal as I drove along. At each stop, I reached out to talk to one or more people, which is a trick until one gets a hande on it. It's easy to talk with clerks, waitresses, counterpeople. What's great is drawing a person into conversation who also is making a brief stop between driving sprints. You'll notice that I have linked most of these stops into Topozone, just to keep track of my location on the earth. I have kept an even more robust road log on my drive out from Royal Oak, Michigan to Los Angeles, California, and soon I'll transcribe it and build it out for these pages.
It's a great question. What is the best way to commemorate ones short stop in a place to which one might not ever return. It is clearly good for our language when a stranger speaks and speaks successfully to a new person; when two people make a connection, it empowers people at the same place, time, altitude and attitude to also start making links.
