Items from my Business Card Collection: Find Out Why

Jolly Roger Hotel [By the Marina]
Written in pen by the clerk: David: 9 - 6, M-Fr. The night clerk couldn't quote me a weekly rate; that's up to David, the top manager. I don't think he's charging sliding scale. I didn't call. A guy who was carrying a backpack over his shoulder was standing at the counter before me. I don't know why, but as the clerk listened in, the guy was calling a LA friend, requesting to stay for "just one night". Why is a guy calling for a night on a friend's couch when he's at a hotel counter?

Horrocks Farm Market, Inc.
I was shopping for bottles of wine, high quality but corkless. I wanted easy-twist Stevlin. At the hotel bar at the Best Western kitty-corner to Horrock's, I was enjoying wine with a woman from California, and we missed closing time. This beautiful woman had flown to Michigan to talk to potato farmers. I told her about Mahar, a man who grows the greatest spuds in the silt of ancient stream bed. The earth is as brown and moist as coffee grounds. She looked at me ruefully and said, "I should have ordered one more glass of wine. Tonight, I wanted to be prepared, although I'm sure my potato outreach agent had moved along. I talked to Tim Copeland, who wore a baseball cap from R.L Phillips Night Harvest. Lansing is not laden with wine-shoppes, but his pricing scheme showed too few price points. You could buy a 4.99 bottle of wine, a 9.99 bottle of wine or a 19.99 bottle of wine. He was a real sport; knew all about Trader Joe's easy-to-swallow prices. But there's no Trader Joe's in Lansing, yet. I didn't open the bottle of Bonnie Doon Big House Red until I got to Marina Del Rey, California. By then, it had gone out and back to California once in jets. And it had gone out to California once, carried in my suitcase conveyed by my car.

The Anvil Saloon

I enjoyed luncheon here as the guest of Lulu Cameron, painter and zeitgeist lifestyle sylist. We hunkered down in the best seat in the house: the northwestern corner. We could see the ancient street (over two centuries of foot, horse and tire travel), scan along the bar, browse the patrons and see out Missouri cutie waitress carrying the delicious food to us. It is the first place where the batter stuck relentlessly to the onion rings. Lulu quietly corrected her order; however, it caused quite a stir. The waitress brought the mistaken sandwich back to the table twice to discuss what was a miscommunication and an order-taker mistake. The bartender and owner made a visit to our table to conduct his own investigation. And then the order was corrected. Okay, so it's Missouri, the show-me state (show-me and show-me and show-me a third time).

Hampton Inn - Rolla

I needed a pit stop, an internet connection with easy-to-plug into power. So I pulled off the road into one of Rolla's three off-ramps. I inquired with Sarah if I could plug in, and she gave me the secret code. And I took care of my business, communicating with people waiting for me to arrive in California. And I took care of business in the little room too. I think I sat there undisturbed for about two hours. I even enjoyed and apple and a cup of coffee. I once could afford to stay in a Hampton Inn when I business traveled, and someday, when I've got the budget, I will again. By the time I left, a woman named Sarah was manning the counter, but she was a different Sarah ! Just as strikingly beautiful as the previous Sarah.
