The Sparkle of St. Elmos: Letter to an Indy Limo Chauffeur Unanswered

Written 31 Mar 2004

Hi J,

I was just thinking about our nice get-together last Tuesday night at St. Elmo's, and I came upon an picture of Hoagie Carmichael, who played music at the Columbia Club in the thirties. As you probably already know, the club is honoring him with a celebration and an exhibition of photographs.

To me, it was a great conversation, although it was hard to hear in the chatty, clubby bar. You knew all about the city, so as I read more about Indy, I wished that I could pick up the talk where we left it. I have a feeling that if you moved to a new city, you would soon be as well acquainted with its charms.

But it's not just Indy I want to talk to you about. You were describing the beauty of driving through the city, and how you are witness to poetic images daily: the street that runs between the sun and the rain shower, for one.

So let's pick up the conversation again? Until next we talk, think of me as one of the kids of St. Elmo's and your friend five hours north.
