For Some Reason, Wilbo Loves Jacksonopolis Michigan

Thursday, July 27, 2006 6:53 PM, Texas Time

Subject: Jackson had 300K for Bob Brown's "Super Sucker" movie.

In a continuing series of dossiers on art scenes in the state of Michigan...

It's true. Bob Brown produced two movies with Jeff Daniels, "Escanaba in da Moonlight" and "Super Sucker". Spring 2006, I heard Bob Brown speak in Augusta, Michigan at a symposium organized by DH of the West Michigan Alliance for Film and Video. Oh, the joys of networking. It was held at Brook Lodge, Dr. Upjohn's private estate, and Avram Ludwig, Actors Studio board member, showed up to talk with Bob. During his talk, Bob honored the city of Jackson for ponying up 300,000 dollars worth of free meals, services and donations during filming in downtown Jackson. Does Jackson, Michigan sound hungry enough for you?

I'm just warming up on praising Jackson. You renaissance festival types and lit majors will be happy to know that the Michigan Shakespeare Festival is now in session (opening night on Thursday, July 27, but the Thursday footlights as of this writing are extinguished). Worry not; you can catch the shows throughout the three-week festival. Governor Jenny and the State Senate just voted it the official Shakespeare Festival of Michigan. Guv Jenny gets it.

I don't want to go on much longer; why should I choke off your thrill of discovery? I could tell you about the rent-controlled live-work artist lofts planned by the Enterprise Group or restoration of their Michigan Theatre. I should let you have fun with the footwork. Why would I bother you by suggesting visits to four or five vineyards close at hand?

Your key to Jackson's art scene is the Scarab 49201 webpage, and that will tell you who to write, call and visit. Can you say raw space backed up by civic, corporate and foundational money? Go west, young sundancers, but not too far west.
