Tonight, at Meijers in Norton Shores Michigan, it's shop with a Lumberjack night.

I think the whole crew of the Muskegon Lumberjack's are out with debit
cards buying young folks Christmas toys at Meijers. The young men are
wearing their jerseys proudly, although the men look a tad vunerable
and even awkward. This is unusual considering these men can skate like
pros in competition at arenas all over the Midwest and even come from
the shoulder if the opponents treat them roughly. The tile floor and
well illuminated interior of Meijers is no hockey rink with familiar
ice, but it's a kind of power play they'll soon know well. Being in
the public eye doing the good work is new to them, and you bring a
freshness. The awkardness speaks of authenticity, and speaks of the
distance these men are from home. I saw a few of them marching into
the store from the cold parking lot, dressed only in a jersey, and the
foursome looked a tad amazed when a man yelled out, "You guys rock"!
I got to overhear a few conversations as the Jacks sat down with these
elementary school students over cookies and milk in the cafe, asking
these young ones good questions about the day at school or the plans
for Christmas Holiday. And listening and paying attention for the
answer. I had to admit I took an unusual pleasure on seeing the shield
of Michigan sewn on the jersey right shoulder, a strong place for a
bold symbol.

Two years ago, as part of the Jaycees Winterfest in downtown Muskegon,
the Jaycees were given two Lumberjacks to auction off as bachelor
dates. Well, let us be precise. The Lumberjacks had gift packages that
went up for bidding and the night on the town came along as an, ahem,
option. These men had dressed up in grey bespoke and had gel in their
hair. But nothing of the amateur Lumberjack existed in their posture.
It had been refined from their professional, public personas. I'm not
sure which endeared me to the Lumberjacks more, the amateurs or the
pros out helping out the town. By the way, neither pro Lumberjack
earned more than minimum in the Jaycee bachelor auction.
