So my new friends explained to me how they hitch-hiked all over the
country. So to see me walking along a dark road on a cold night, the
hitch-hiker ethic urged them to pull over and offer me a lift. To be
honest I accepted although I desperately needed the two miles of
walking exercise. They were prepared to take me a long ways, even out
of their way. Luckily, the Homestead and my home both were on their
route to the Norton Shores Meijer, and this made it a quick favor for
them. My story is all they asked for a lift. I had just dropped a car
off at the airport and I wouldn't need another one until next Friday,
I said. They were happy to drop me off in the Homestead lot and
laughed as I called it the Bumstead. I invited them in for a round,
but they declined. They had to go shopping and rest after many days on
the road. Amazing, the three had never stepped foot in the Homestead
but promised to check it out soon. I didn't expect them to take me up;
I was just being social and grateful. I sat at the corner and my favorite bartender, Angie, served me up a
Budweiser with a dainty glass. She didn't hear me right, and thought I
had said dirty. A woman also at the corner explained, "DAINTY!" It
really is a daintly glass, about three inches high and narrower than a
beer car. It's less barbaric to pour a little beer out of the can and
sip from it. And then Angie served me my beer and turned down the lights. "Well",
said the woman at my corner of the bar, "Now you look cuter."
