Scores of sailboats await Spring, perched upon cradles in the yard of
Great Lakes Marina, and many aluminum masts are strung with ropes that
are plucked by winds, light and strong. I'm not sure if these ropes
are strung with metal hardware, but when a wind blows through the
masts, the masts are struck, and a music arises. I can hear it from
the front sidewalk before Marine Tap Room or the deck of Lakeside
Tavern. It reminds me of the irregular pattern of rain drops upon
concrete sidewalks before the rain saturates the surface and softens
the sound. It is a familar music, although if written as a musical
score, one day's concert would not compare note for note with another.
I am sure this partly explains its musical appeal to me. When I visit
these Lakeside Bars, I always step outside to enjoy the concert,
usually soft but violent and vigorous during wind storms. It is most
bittersweet when the three day blow arrives in September, betokening
the end of radiant, warm summer.
