I am happy to report that temperature outside is above freezing, and we have puddles spreading out across roads. I worry because snowbanks crowd the shoulders, and all that water has fewer places to drain. If ten inches of snow is one inch of rain, we could have an abundant amount of water seeking lower ground in days. Our temperature is predicted to rise, last I looked. We could enjoy a reversal of weather, capricious is Michigan weather, but I don't think it likely. Wednesday brings rain, and snow must think rain is some kind of traitor to its cause. Ice is a traitor to our cause of driving, and I'm glad our weather is staying above freezing. Road salt isn't going to melt an ice pond inches deep, crossing a two lane road. It is dark outside now, but I am okay with that darkness. I was greeted by a brighter sun as I stepped out of my office and I didn't clutch my coat tightly at neck to hold out the heavy, cold, stinging air. Thursday night, as I crossed the Grand River drawbridge, I saw a setting sun behind the Kitchel-Lindquist Dunes Preserve, and it reminded me of a reddish ripe peach, as sign that we are tilting back to our sun again. The sky before twilight has more brightness infused in its sea of air, lightening a lead dolor seen on our shortest days. I am certain if I stepped out, I would enjoy colorful hues and sky effects. We have come to expect these sundogs, solar flares, color washes in our nicer weather, and we stand at a show's beginning.
There's a feeling we get when we arrive in September and the snow fences go up on the beaches. We feel broke. We've run through six months of heavenly days, and to earn six more, we have to pass through a workplace of tundra, storms, drifts, cold gusts and dark. Well, it's is almost bonus time again. We've another pleasurable three seasons paid for a hard way on the weekly installment plan. It's time to buy those summer clothes, make those summer plans, polish up the binoculars for bird watching, take the bicycle to the repair shop for a tune up. This note is your early alert. I've given you a head start. If you haven't finished to winter's work at your place of employment, it's time for a big kick because you're going to want long lunches and early departures from work coming soon. A moment will arrive this Lake Michigan summer 2011 where you will wish to surrender to the answer of outdoor fun, and you must make ready for saying yes, why not?
