Near Fruitvale exit of US-31, Doug Borns smokehouse & Villa Venafro make Montague MI a food destination.

Doug Borns has his smokehouses smoking, but his stock dwindles in his store. Doug has listed his business for sale and so far there's no buyer. I have heard the price of 235 Thousand. If that includes the land and the liquor license and the corner land off the expressway, it's a deal worth considering. Maybe the business sale explains the draw down of inventory, empty beer coolers and few chips and pretzels to go with the smoked venison sausages and buffalo jerky. I hear Doug will stay around, sharing his recipes and passing on the art of the smokehouse. Doug might be wishing to retire, running the strenuous business despite using a walker.

Villa Venafro came as a surprise because I was expecting a place as simple as Teddy Spaghetti's in Fruitport. Not only does the Italian family restaurant have an Asian flair thanks to a good marriage, the 41 year old business has a serious menu that could please Tony Soprano for a week. The interior has a total refresh, with new carpet and paint. It's a genuine family restaurant, with family children eating at a table before running off the cheerleading practice, exactly what one would see at a trattoria or an Oriental establishment. Every dish is homemade, including the soups. I started off with a spinich and mushroom soup made with fresh chicken stock.

Ask for Jade as your waitress. She brings a fine sense of service and aesthetics to her hospitality.
