Wilbo Prepares for a Visit to Mike Bloomberg Headquarters in the Julia Row, New Orleans

February 4, 2020 @ 3:16 PM
FedEx Office at St Charles and Julia Street
Warehouse District, New Orleans, Louisiana

Across the street from this location, Michael Bloomberg’s people have plans to open their Louisiana office to the public in a few hours. Bloomberg has broken one of my rules for political organizing. He has rented an expensive office in a prestigious district. Most candidates open offices as cheaply as possible, usually in outmoded office space donated by a supporter. I recall the weird, worn carpet in Dana Balter’s donated office in a desolate section of Syracuse.

United State Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has left the race. She opened her New York State office in Troy, New York. I learned later she had saved tons of money and escaped the commitment of a permanent lease by buying a membership at the Troy Innovation Garage. One word to the garage staff and no more monthly rent, a case of total flexibility. I dropped my rent in Troy at the Center of Gravity with an email the day before renewal.

Marianne Williamson ran up an uncomfortable debt while running for office with a professional staff and all the trappings. So she let go of the pro staff, cut the spending and put a staff of volunteers to work on her long shot bid for the Democratic nomination. I have the feeling she’ll be glad to get the debt paid off by continuing to run with volunteers.

I walk with my mind active, and the doors of the HQ on Julia were open. Doors open has been a default for doors on the Julia Row since Henry Clay paid calls to the residents. I saw a likely advertising man sitting at a table with a stack of Bloomberg posters. I went hmmm and thought, “Another young man who has laced into the endless spending of Bloomberg on his campaign”.

He looked back at me with a touch of panic in his eye, but I just kept on walking. I mean Bloomberg has approved expenditures up to and beyond one hundred million dollars. Nothing I’ve seen coming from that ad and marketing spend has done more that create awareness in my mind. It’s all so bland. The ad people have started to call their real estate agents, looking for lovely properties in the Hudson Valley.

A spend of one hundred million cannot hurt Bloomberg because he has a net worth of almost 70 billion dollars, most of the billions accumulated since he left the Mayor’s office of New York City. He revolutionized the stock trading industry with his Bloomberg trading terminal. And what he knew to put into the terminal and his news network he has known to apply to his investment. The man has found a cash cow. Another name for that has a Finnish Origin. The man has created a Sampo, the Finnish mill for creating unlimited wealth. Just keep cranking it. Now I wish I could ask Grandmother Aino about the hand mill she kept on a shelf above the stove.

I’m going to wander over to the office in a few minutes, just to see if I want to hang out, make calls, overhear Democratic gossip. I know that any dollar passing through the office has been nailed down by the elite team. However, with money sources such as Google Adword, it’s hard to tie down all the cash. I like to make money as much as anyone else.

To be frank, I wouldn’t mind Bloomberg as the Democratic candidate. He has a skill set that most politicians never learn, the skills of making money by disrupting an industry with technology. Government could use a reboot, especially if efficiency and tools make our tax dollars go farther. When Elizabeth Warren begins to talk about taking a hefty amount of money from highly successful billionaires to funnel through government bureaucracies, I kind of roll my eyes. I much rather see the spare money of billionaires go through venture capital and startups..

Socialist conspiracy theorists have dreamed up the Bloomberg and Amazon’s Michael Bezos have winked and nodded at one another, ensuring Bloomberg support somewhere down the line for the huge spend. It’s just mad, but Bloomberg and Bezos want to split the very liberal vote so Bernie Sanders gets denied the nomination again, serving up a defeat to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. AOC has been blamed for torpedoing Amazon’s deal to totally transform Queens New York into a state of the art Amazon HQ town and intellectual campus.

I love the guys who spinned this scenario for me. They are solid guys when it comes to making a living with their technical skills. I met both guys out on the arts scene in Muskegon, one a poet and one a sculptor. So one has to take them seriously when they take a shine to Bernie, Yang and AOC. However, I’ve teased them about drinking the Kool-Aid when it comes to Bloomberg conspiracy theories.
