Wilbo Thinks He Knows Something About the American Literary World

Date: Friday, October 8 2004 9:44 AM

K., for a little background about the job. Ruth Lilly, as in Eli Lilly, willed 100 million to the Poetry Foundation. The foundation is just starting to flex its muscle; recently, they held a major awards night at the Millennium Park, the Frank Geary designed facility on the lakeshore.

I'm betting the foundation is going to need management assistance as well as local coordinators very soon. The president of the foundation has an MBA as well as a background in the arts; that's very similar to your resume. The ambitious plans are contained in the NY Times article. I bet you could get an interview, and if you are the right person, and you probably are, your geographical location will matter little.

Seabiscuit proved the power of crossovers between literature and sports and leisure. The author was very ill for many years, and the thoroughbred racing publishers allowed her to file articles at her own pace for years. And then the thoroughbred people gave her the rights to the Red Pollard story, the jockey who rode Seabiscuit most of the time. This connection between literature and sports and leisure will be explored continuously for years to come. I'm thinking of teaching my nephews to write NASCAR poetry. I've been slipping out to points on Lake Erie on weekends, doing research for a historical novel. I've been sending JC tidbits from time to time, backgrounders of sorts. Poor guy is awfully nice to read them, even though I'm spamming him with half-baked literature. I'll probably see you over at Tom's. I've never partied there. Wilbo
