What up with that, those #WanderingActsOfKindness performed by @WanderingWilbo?

There's a guy who writes WanderingWilbo, and maybe his younger brother
has the best take on him. During the growing up year, said brother
once often sang the tune, "Salvation Army" as so, "Put a nickel in the
drum, save my brother, drunken bum". So despite earning six figures
last year, the guy who writes WanderingWilbo always knows where the
soup kitchens and homeless shelters are located in any city where he
visits. Luckily, the guy who writes WanderingWilbo is the guy buying
the soup. Let's hope it stays that way. This year, for the United Way,
the guy who writes for Wilbo inched up into the buck a day category.
He sees it as insurance rather than a charitable contribution.

Let me share with you a story from the road. One day, in a far away
city on Virginia coast, he overheard a newly hired salesman talking
about his living quarters, an immaculate dresser with a lot of
personal style. The newly hired salesperson had been driving in from
the Outer Banks, a drive of two hours, difficult to sustain. So he
found a place in town. He said, "Yeah, they let you stay in an
apartment until you find a permanent place". Mind you, he was a newly
hired salesperson who had plunked a ton of money down on commuting.
Could he afford an extended stay apartment? Or did he bunk at the
mission right around the corner from the newly built, palatial office
tower where he placed sales calls? Salesmen are good at image
management, and when he left the sales floor, maybe unsuccessfully, he
claimed he had been re-assigned. This was a highly competitive
business concern where people got re-assigned every day. There's a lot
of people in America today where home and work are two or more hours
away, and the company isn't paying relocation or plunking down for
temporary accommodations. Fortunately, I can always negotiate this
nicety. Until maybe my latent case of mad cow disease raises its ugly
horns, that is. I do like me a steak from Calgary. People, these are
jokes!

If you follow me, you'll know I heard Johnny A and his band at One
Trick Pony Monday, October 11, 2010. So this cat is traveling with two
additional men, bass and drummer, and he can perform a concert for
dinner and a place to stay? Well, WYCE and the Hat Trick series has a
great partner, the Peaches Bed and Breakfast. So we know Johnny and
his entorurage slept one or two nights in paradise. The One Trick Pony
probably blew them to a fantastic meal. Yeah, the manager refilled
Johnny A's glass with Johnny Walker Black each time he so nicely
asked. But really, how did the band afford to play in Grand Rapids for
this gig? Can't find the name of the law firm who sponsors the series,
probably covering some of the band's retainer, but certainly not at
market rates. Maybe the law firm only promises a match of the money
collected when the hat goes round. Basically, a lot of straight up
people bucked up so the trio could raise some funds for a local Grand
Rapids charity. Johnny A and his men totally brought it for two sets
and Johnny A brought his A game on the guitar.

So I arrived after the intermission, after the passing of the Hat
Trick "Hat", after the master of ceremonies announced that 1500
dollars had been raised, far more than the law firm's promised match.
Well, I had skipped the hat, right? I though about letting it slide,
but how could I when everybody from Peaches Inn to Johnny A had been
so generous? And how could I listen to that guitar sing without being
caught up in the magic of the artist? So I found the master or
ceremonies and bucked up. Nobody really knows who gave the extra money
after the hat pass. That's the way I like my donating: anonymous.
There's something biblical in that. If you can find the verse, email
it to me. I would look it up, but I have to go back to work.

Thus, I've been experimenting with Wandering Acts of Kindness, places
where I chip in and don't hang around looking for a tax reciept or my
name on the wall. It's small donations for now and there is no
application process. And yes, I aware that when I give, well, it's a
bucket of water in a river of continuous kindness. But when you wander
around the way WanderingWilbo does, there's plenty of chances for an
act of kindness and a wander away.
