I am astounded at the number of homebrewers I am meeting in West
Michigan, and the hobby really takes the hobbiest places. I met a
couple, let's call them Scott and Shannon. Every Sunday, the married
couple work to put up a keg of beer. When there's a party planned, you
can be sure Scott and Shannon make first place on the A-List. They
bring the beer, and the canned stuff gets ignored until the keg runs
out. Scott never shows up for a bachelor party dry handed; it's handy
to show up with a growler of your own under each arm. I remember in
1989, one of my fellow teachers brought a six pack for all of his
colleagues in the teachers lounge, a fantastic Christmas present. He
was a pioneer of the now burgeoning subculture. And he earned points
with the principal and superintendant. Many of the alright guys in the
office brew in spare time, and it makes good conversation as we wait
for a meeting to start. Home brewing can be a way of brewing up a new
career, and I'm sure many brewmeisters at home think of the
Homebrewer's United event at New Holland Brewing Company as an
audition.
