Mile 19537: Out between Marne and Conklin, you'll find the Catholic parish town of Wright, MI

I am in the clean, high ceiling, long bar drinking establishment call the Wright Tavern. Clearly a destination bar for Harley expeditions, the corralled deck out front has picnic tables and posts for shade umbrellas. A man from Grand Rapids has finished up installing a sound system. Friday, the house will host Go Go dancers and on March 31st, patrons will be challenged by a mechanical bull. The bartender, a woman, and a two women at the bar, have chattered about which locals are going up on the small corner stage to Go Go. The village has a two story brick school house that houses a grade school, an extension of the modest Catholic Church, St. Josephs. The older sanctuary must have burned down or suffered the wrecking ball. The modest structure reminds me of late twentieth century construction.

Tragedy has struck the town. Two parents lost their only son three years ago. Around the end of February, it seems, they have a crash, but escape a fiery end. The Thursday before last, Brittany Snyder died in a car accident, their daughter, an eighteen year old woman. She had worked at the Wright Tavern, just a beginner starting as a waitress and a helper. The tavern has a benefit planned for Sunday, March 25th, Noon to 4:00 PM. Proceeds to the Snyder family, guests can expect an auction, raffles and dinner.

The bartender noticed my interest and answered a few questions. The car struck a tree near Kent City around One in the morning. The friend went for help. By the time help arrived, the car had caught fire, removing all hope.

If you wish to donate money or auction items, call the tavern at 616-899-2342. Ask for Hannah Reed.

I am about three or four miles east of Conklin, where I will visit the Irish Session there. Wilson Road, my route, passes through Apple orchards, cattle farms. The Musketawa Trail crosses it, and the trail takes a jog along Wilson.
