Last night, at 7:30 PM, I set off from Muskegon County Airport on
foot. This is so radical an act, there are no sidwalks to use. There's
a claim that a MATS bus line runs there, but it's a green dotted line
on system map. I could tell drivers saw me and took me for crazy for
walking. With few exceptions, passing cars gave me a wide berth, going
into another lane to avoid me. I was walking mostly in the gutter or
along an established well marked bicycle path. Did I get taken for a
suicidal crazy looking to throw myself under the wheels of a well
insured vehicle Point is, I was feeling very good, very full of self
esteem, wearing a white hat that showed up well in head beams. None
slowed down to give me a lift, a hallmark of kindness. The moon could
still glow through the cloud cover and my night vision activated in
this illumination. I felt like a Jim Harrison wearwolf. I recalled
attempting to walk roads on Pelee Island in 2000, but the locals of
this Canadian Island found in Lake Erie always pulled over, insisting
I accept a lift. Often, it was the women who ran the Tin Goose Inn,
delightful personalities. Painters too. During my 3 mile walk, I was
passed by empty MATS buses, even when I waved, even though they rolled
empty. I saw two jets ascend off the runway rising and hooking towards
Chicago, an amazing sight. Luckily, I could stop and pause for a
Budweiser and the Old Homestead, and that extended my walk by an hour.
Later, I popped in Pizza Hut for some pasta and to avoid the cold
rains. With all my stops, I didn't arrive back to my place until 11:30
PM.
